This weekend, Gowanus’ own Littlefield welcomes the First American Beatbox Championships Grand Final. Tickets are about $35 a day, or $80 for a weekend pass. We hear there’s a discount though if you use promo code: “ABC2010,” and tix drop down to $20.
These “championships” are somewhat of a trend in NYC–we had one for Air Guitar and, of course, one for Beards.
Littlefield has been open for about a year now, and the unique space is really coming into its own, with some of the most eccentric and exciting shows in the last few months. Looking over their calendar of upcoming events, we noticed they have some pretty sick sounds on the horizon, including the Chip Music Concert Series on August 7 and a show by the French indie pop outfit Hold Your Horses! on August 12.
You got moms in Lycra outfits pushing strollers down 7th Avenue. Hipsters making that slow grind up 9th Street on fixed-gear bicycles. Stoned and apathetic teenagers pulling remarkable moves on skateboards outside the Brooklyn Museum. A river of yoga mats and short shorts in Carroll Gardens. And, of course, the homeless dudes with shopping carts full of scrap metal making mad dashes on 3rd Avenue.
Our friends and neighbors seem to all have one thing in common: they’re sweatin’ balls right now. And most of them look pretty good while doing it.
But I hate to break it to you. It’s not fitness or contributing to a so-called “active” or “healthy” lifestyle. Your health and wellness ain’t covered by just moving your body daily, despite what some proselytizers have told you. That 15 minute bike ride to Lower Manhattan is not enough. Nor is parking your car near the back of Fairway and walking across the entire lot. Nor is moseying over to Green Market at Grand Army Plaza from you apartment on Saturdays.
It’s a cruel game guaranteed to break fans’ hearts. Once the group stage is over, there can’t be two winners; one team is to advance, one goes home – no room for second chances.
With the stakes set so high, US fans roamed the streets of South Brooklyn looking for available screens where they could join others and share the passion of the match. The well-known bars were OVERFLOWING with fans, and newer places like Bar 718 were there to welcome them. (Continued)
It’s nearing the end of week two of the South Africa Brooklyn World Cup and fans are starting to show signs of wear as they step out of bars into the harsh summer sun.
Slovakia fans slumbered to Korzo for the early games on Tuesday and Sunday this week. Though the kitchen was closed, the bartender greeted early birds with fresh coffee, cold brews, and free pastries at this neighborhood favorite.
On Wednesday at the Chip Shop, the ever reliable Jimmy welcomed Spanish supporters who had been hoping to catch the game at La Mancha. After getting some work done on their cooling system, La Mancha suffered an electrical mishap that forced them to close for the day. Only the FDNY was allowed then, but expect a big turnout for the 6/25 game as Spain fights to win a spot for the next round. (Continued)
Root Hill, on the corner of 4th Ave. and Carroll has long served as the first stop for those in need of a caffeine fix en route to the R Train. It’s soon to become the last stop on your way home, with the grand opening of Trash Pony Bar at Root Hill. Come by tomorrow night at 8 to celebrate their launch and some hair of dog if you are still hurting from tonight’s OVERFLOW Burlesque show.
OVERFLOW magazine is a free, quarterly, print magazine distributed throughout South Brooklyn. South Brooklyn, historically, is the cluster of neighborhoods around the Gowanus Canal. The Gowanus Canal gets right ripe when the weather moves in some directions.
